Copper binds to the peptide through the histidine imidazole nitrogen and the terminal amino group, forming a stable square-planar complex. Binding constants reported for copper(II) with GHK are high, so the peptide competes effectively for copper in solution. The complex absorbs visible light, which gives solutions a blue to violet colour. Whether the metal-free peptide has a distinct biological function of its own is still an open question; some work treats it mainly as a copper delivery vehicle, while other work reports peptide-specific effects.
The compound was first isolated from human plasma in the 1970s by Loren Pickart, who later described copper-binding activity in liver and other tissues. Early reports focused on its presence in blood and its ability to carry copper between proteins. Commercial and cosmetic use of the term 'copper peptide' has since broadened, and labels rarely distinguish GHK-Cu from other copper-binding fragments. This naming overlap makes literature searching harder, because cosmetic ingredient lists, supplier catalogues and laboratory papers use different vocabularies for the same molecule.
GHK-Cu is the copper-binding complex formed by the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The free peptide is usually written as GHK, and the complex is written as GHK-Cu or Cu-GHK. The sequence was identified in human plasma and later detected in saliva and urine. Its name comes from the single-letter codes of glycine, histidine and lysine. The complex is widely described as a naturally occurring carrier of copper in blood rather than as a free peptide with its own hormonal role.
Analytical confirmation usually combines a separation method with a copper-specific measurement. Liquid chromatography or mass spectrometry establishes peptide identity and purity, while an elemental measurement quantifies the metal content. A frequent misconception is that any blue solution contains an intact copper peptide complex; color alone does not confirm structure, because free copper salts and degraded mixtures can also appear colored. Literature on efficacy is mixed, with in vitro findings often more dramatic than human evidence, and reviews note small sample sizes and short follow-up. Open questions include optimal concentration, skin penetration, and long-term effects.
Proposed mechanisms for copper peptide activity center on delivery of copper ions to cells and on peptide fragments acting as signaling molecules. Copper is a cofactor for enzymes involved in collagen cross-linking and antioxidant defense, and the peptide may improve its availability at target sites. Separately, the tripeptide and its breakdown products have been reported to influence gene expression in cultured fibroblasts. Much of this evidence comes from laboratory cell cultures and animal models rather than controlled human trials. The relative contribution of the copper ion and the peptide sequence is therefore not fully settled.
Stability depends on temperature, light exposure, moisture, and the presence of oxidizing or reducing agents. Solid material held dry and protected from light is generally more stable than aqueous solutions, which can undergo gradual degradation. Recommended storage in much of the literature is a freezer at around minus twenty degrees Celsius for long-term retention, with working aliquots kept cold and shielded from light. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles and alkaline pH are commonly noted as factors that accelerate loss of the intact complex, though exact degradation rates vary.

Published work on GHK-Cu is dominated by in vitro experiments and small animal studies. Human trials tend to be short and small, with endpoints such as skin appearance rather than clinical outcomes. Review articles often summarize the same underlying laboratory findings, which can make the evidence base look broader than it is. Several basic questions remain open: the concentration of the intact complex in human tissue, the route by which it crosses the skin barrier, and whether effects seen in culture produce measurable changes in people.
Laboratory studies describe GHK-Cu as a source of copper that cells can take up, with reported effects on collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan synthesis in cultured fibroblasts. The peptide also appears in wound-repair research, where it is linked to the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. These observations come largely from cell and animal models. How directly the complex controls any single pathway in intact human skin remains an open question, and reported effects depend on concentration, vehicle, and exposure time.
Material described in research and cosmetic supply chains is typically a synthetic peptide supplied as a lyophilized powder. Purity is commonly reported through chromatographic separation, often at 95 percent or higher, while copper content is confirmed by separate elemental analysis. Batch variation in color and solubility can reflect residual counter-ions, moisture, or partial oxidation of the peptide. Because the complex is not a single regulatory entity, specifications differ between suppliers and are not standardized internationally.
GHK-Cu is a coordination complex formed between the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine and a copper(II) ion. The peptide binds copper through its histidine imidazole nitrogen, its terminal amino group, and a deprotonated amide nitrogen, creating a stable chelate ring. The resulting complex carries a distinctive blue to blue-violet color, which arises from copper d-d electronic transitions. In the solid state it is usually handled as a powder, while in solution the complex can dissociate and re-form depending on pH and competing ligands. The name copper tripeptide-1 is widely used in ingredient listings.
The tripeptide was first isolated from a human plasma filtrate in 1973 during studies of tissue repair factors. Later work detected the free peptide and its copper complex in saliva, urine, and wound fluid, suggesting a natural role in tissue remodeling. Plasma concentrations reported in early literature decline with age, a pattern often cited in discussions of skin aging. Whether these endogenous levels are directly functional or largely incidental remains an open question. The peptide sequence is conserved across mammalian species.
Purity assessment typically involves high-performance liquid chromatography for the peptide and atomic spectroscopy for copper content. The ratio of copper to peptide is a key quality parameter; a value near one indicates proper stoichiometry. Impurities can include free peptide, copper salts, and truncated sequences from synthesis. Because the complex is dynamic, sample preparation and mobile-phase conditions can shift the observed species. Reported purity values therefore depend on the analytical method and should be interpreted with that context.
Characterizing GHK-Cu requires methods that distinguish the intact complex from free peptide and unbound copper. UV-visible absorption around 600 nm provides a rapid check for copper coordination, while circular dichroism reports on peptide secondary structure. Mass spectrometry confirms the peptide mass and can detect copper adducts under carefully controlled conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance is particularly informative for Cu(II) because it reveals the ligand field symmetry. No single technique fully defines the complex, so laboratories combine orthogonal methods.
Stability of GHK-Cu in solution depends on pH, temperature, buffer composition, and oxygen exposure. The copper center can undergo reduction or dissociation, especially in the presence of strong metal chelators such as EDTA. Aqueous solutions are often prepared fresh or stored frozen to limit degradation. Lyophilized solid is more stable than liquid formulations, but it can absorb moisture and should be kept dry. Light exposure may also affect copper complexes, though the effect is often modest.
== Biosynthesis == Gramicidin S biosynthetic pathway consists of two-enzyme of nonribosomal peptide synthases (NRPSs), gramicidin S synthetase I (GrsA) and gramicidin S synthetase II (GrsB), to give a product as a cyclic decapeptide. Within the biosynthetic pathway, there are total of five modules that specifically recognize, activate, and condense the amino acids to gramicidin S. Starting module GrsA consists of three domains: Adenylation (A) domain where it incorporates the amino acid and activates it by adenylation using ATP, Thiolation (T) domain or peptidyl carrier protein (PCP) in which the adenylated amino acid gets covalently attached to the 4´-phosphopantetheine group and this gets loaded onto the conserved serine in the T domain, Epimerization (E) domain where it epimerizes L-amino acid to D-amino acid. Starting module GrsA loads D-Phe onto the system. Second enzyme cluster GrsB contains four modules, each containing condensation (C), adenylation (A), and thiolation (T) domains and thioesterase domain (TE) at the end. C domain forms a peptide bond between two amino acids, D-Phe and L-Pro. L-Val, L-Orn, and L-Leu are incorporated sequentially by the next three modules of GrsB. After repeating the whole module synthesis once again, TE domain cyclizes and releases the two peptides and dimerize them together to form the final product.
Tianeptine/naloxone (developmental code names TNX-601, TNX-601-CR, TNX-601-ER), or naloxone/tianeptine, is an extended-release combination of tianeptine, an atypical μ-opioid receptor agonist, and naloxone, an orally inactive μ-opioid receptor antagonist, which was under development for the treatment of major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and neurocognitive dysfunction associated with corticosteroid use but was never marketed. Whereas tianeptine is marketed widely throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin America but is not available in the United States or the United Kingdom, tianeptine/naloxone was under development for registration in the United States and other countries. In addition, whereas tianeptine has a short duration of action and requires administration three times per day, tianeptine/naloxone was developed as an extended-release formulation with enhanced pharmacokinetics suitable for once-daily administration. The combination formulation employs tianeptine as the oxalate salt, which is said to have improved physicochemical properties for use in the extended-release formulation compared to the amorphous tianeptine sodium that is used in immediate-release tianeptine-only formulations. Naloxone is used in misuse-resistant oral drug formulations as it is inactive if taken orally but becomes active if oral tablets are crushed and administered parenterally, such as by injection.
== Medical uses == Pegulicianine is indicated for fluorescence imaging in adults with breast cancer as an adjunct for the intraoperative detection of cancerous tissue within the resection cavity following removal of the primary specimen during lumpectomy surgery.
CaMKII has multiple modes of activation to cause the incorporation of AMPA receptors into the perisynaptic membrane. CAMKII enzyme is eventually responsible for the development of the actin cytoskeleton of neuronal cells and, eventually, for the dendrite and axon development (synaptic plasticity). The first is direct phosphorylation of synaptic-associated protein 97 (SAP97), a scaffolding protein. First, SAP-97 and Myosin-VI, a motor protein, are bound as a complex to the C-terminus of AMPARs. Following phosphorylation by CaMKII, the complex moves into the perisynaptic membrane. The second mode of activation is through the MAPK pathway. CaMKII activates the Ras proteins, which go on to activate p42/44 MAPK, which drives AMPAR insertion directly into the perisynaptic membrane.
== Fuels and consumption == Ashing is a test to deduce the amount of ash forming material present in a petroleum product so as to decide its use in certain applications. Ash-forming materials are considered to be undesirable impurities or contaminants. In the ash analysis of petroleum products, ash content represents the incombustible component remaining after a sample of the furnace oil is completely burned. The ash content of petroleum products is generally low. It is defined as the inorganic residue that remains after combustion of the oil in air at specific high temperature. Ash typically ranges from 0.1 to 0.2% in oil. Some of the ash forming constituents occur naturally in crude oil; others are present as a result of refining or contamination during storage or distribution. Knowledge of the amount of ash-forming material present in a product can provide information as to whether or not the product is suitable application. In the ash analysis of coal and other solid fuels, the amount of sulfur retained in the ash during the ashing process is not constant, but rather is dependent upon the conditions of ashing as well as the other inorganic constituents in the ash that may form sulfates during the ashing procedure. As such, different ashing procedures may yield different ash contents.

Hird continued to be an outstanding performer in his utility role when fit, but age was forcing him to miss games through injury with increasing frequency. He suffered broken ribs and a calf strain during his 200th and 250th games, respectively.
Yeasts, especially Candida albicans, are the most common penile infection and are rarely identified in samples taken from circumcised males. Both conditions are usually treated with topical antibiotics (metronidazole cream) and antifungals (clotrimazole cream) or low-potency steroid creams. Circumcision is a treatment option for refractory or recurrent balanoposthitis, but in the twenty-first century the availability of the other treatments has made it less necessary. Phimosis also greatly increases the relative risk of penile cancer, and neonatal circumcision has been show to nearly eliminate this risk; however, risk-benefit considerations around the use of circumcision as a cancer-preventive measure are a source of debate. Only 1% of males have phimosis by age 17. The mitigating effect circumcision has on the risk factor introduced by the possibility of phimosis is secondary, in that the removal of the foreskin eliminates the possibility of phimosis. This can be inferred from study results that show uncircumcised men with no history of phimosis are equally likely to have penile cancer as circumcised men.
The four substrates of this enzyme are L-lysine, reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH), oxygen, and a proton. Its products are N(6)-hydroxy-L-lysine, oxidised NADP+, and water. The enzyme is a flavin-containing monooxygenase that uses molecular oxygen as oxidant and incorporates one of its atoms into the starting material. The systematic name of this enzyme class is L-lysine,NADPH:oxygen oxidoreductase (6-hydroxylating). It is also called lysine N6-hydroxylase. It participates in siderophore biosynthesis and uses flavin adenine dinucleotide as a cofactor.

== Overdose == Psilocybin has low toxicity, meaning that it has a low risk of inducing life-threatening events like breathing or heart problems. Research shows that health risks may develop with use of psilocybin. Nonetheless, hospitalizations from it are rare, and overdoses are generally mild and self-limiting. The lethal dose of psilocybin in humans is unknown, but has been estimated to be approximately 200 times a typical recreational dose. A review of the management of psychedelic overdoses suggested that psilocybin-related overdose management should prioritize managing the immediate adverse effects, such as anxiety and paranoia, rather than specific pharmacological interventions, as psilocybin's physiological toxicity tends to be rather limited. One analysis of people hospitalized for psilocybin poisoning found high urine concentrations of phenethylamine (PEA), suggesting that PEA might contribute to the effects of psilocybin poisoning. Despite acting as non-selective serotonin receptor agonists, psilocybin and other major serotonergic psychedelics like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) do not cause serotonin syndrome even in the context of extreme overdose. This is thought to be because they act as partial agonists of serotonin receptors like the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, in contrast to serotonin itself, which is a full agonist. In rats, the median lethal dose (LD50) of psilocybin when administered orally is 280 mg/kg, approximately 1.5 times that of caffeine.

Hadacidin, and hadacidin analogues, have anticancer activity and activity against adenylosuccinate synthetase. Hadacidin is the simplest known naturally occurring hydroxamic acid. The hydroxylamino group is frequently donated by a hydroxylamino acid such as 8-N-hydroxyornithine of the siderochromes. This compound, first isolated and characterized by Kaczka et al. in 1962, seemed well suited for a study of the route of hydroxamic acid biosynthesis. The hydroxamate bond may be considered to be a peptide bond with an oxygen atom on the amide nitrogen, but there is no a priori reason to decide whether the oxygen atom is introduced before or after the formation of the amide bond. In the latter case, formylglycine would be an intermediate in hadacidin biosynthesis. N-Hydroxylation of an amide bond was reported by Cramer et al. (1960), who found that N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene was formed in the intact rat upon administration of 2-acetylaminofluorene. Nevertheless, this finding cannot be considered direct proof of N-hydroxylation of an amide bond because, as the authors point out, the acetyl group is labile in their experiments, and hydroxylation of the amino group might have occurred. Glycine, formate, and the 2-carbon of serine were all found to be very quickly incorporated into hadacidin during its synthesis by Penicillium aurantioviolaceum.
Later in 2007, the NSA launched a replacement for the program, referred to as PRISM, which was subject to the oversight of the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. This program was not publicly revealed until reports by The Washington Post and The Guardian emerged in June 2013.
== Adverse effects == Mild symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, vomiting, headache, sore gums, or frequent urination are common with this medication. Life-threatening side effects such as thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, leukemia and encephalopathy are extremely rare. Theoretically probenecid can increase the risk of uric acid kidney stones.
In November 1944, the division and several attached units were redesignated as Panzerkorps Großdeutschland. By March 1945, the Panzer Grenadier Division Großdeutschland had been reduced to around 4,000 men after the Battle of Memel. It had only one Sturmgeschütz III self-propelled gun, one Panzer IV, five Panthers, and six Tiger Is by 15 March 1945. By 25 April, the division was engaged in heavy fighting in the battles around Pillau. Eight hundred men of the division were evacuated on ferries via the Baltic Sea and surrendered to British forces in Schleswig-Holstein on 9 May. The rest were either killed or captured during the fighting in Pillau or surrendered to Soviet forces on 9 May on the Vistula spit.
However, the tropical Pacific experiences occasional shifts away from these average conditions. If the trade winds (blowing from east to west) are weaker than average, then both the upwelling in the East Pacific and the flow of warmer ocean surface waters towards the West Pacific lessen. This results in a cooler West Pacific and a warmer East Pacific, leading to a shift of cloud and rain towards the East Pacific. This situation is called El Niño. The opposite occurs if trade winds are stronger than average, leading to a warmer West Pacific and a cooler East Pacific. This situation is called La Niña and is associated with increased cloudiness and rainfall over the West Pacific.

The letters GHK are the one-letter codes for glycine, histidine and lysine, the three amino acids in the peptide. The suffix Cu indicates that the peptide is bound to a copper ion, normally copper(II).
The free tripeptide and its copper complex have been measured in human plasma, saliva, urine and some tissue extracts. Reported concentrations vary widely between studies, and the role of the complex in normal physiology remains partly unresolved.
The plain peptide lacks the metal, so its charge, colour and binding behaviour differ. The copper complex is blue and carries a bound copper ion, while the metal-free form is colourless and has different solution chemistry.
Freezer temperatures are common for long-term retention. Light and moisture exposure should be limited. Working portions are best kept cold and used without repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
